LVP & Laminate
Do You Need to Remove Tile Before Installing LVP?
Not always, but often removal is part of the plan. Whether tile should come out before LVP depends on how many layers are present, how heights compare between rooms, the condition of the existing floor and the selected product's requirements. Removal can also reveal conditions that were hidden, so the scope should explain how removal, preparation and new findings will be handled.

Why removal is a project-specific decision
Some tile surfaces may stay in place under new flooring; others are better removed. If you are still deciding whether installation over tile is possible, start with our guide on vinyl plank over existing tile.
This guide focuses on what happens when removal is on the table: the layers involved, the work that follows and how to compare the scope.
Mixed materials and differences in height
When different rooms have different materials, the finished heights often differ too. Removing the existing flooring can be one way to reduce those differences when a homeowner wants one continuous floor.
Multiple flooring layers
Antonio describes one home in a community called Colonial where the kitchen had two flooring layers while other areas had one. His team removed the existing layers, including the underlying tile, and prepared the exposed concrete to remove adhesive residue.
Antonio reports that this allowed a continuous vinyl installation without the previous height differences. Every home is different, but the example shows why counting layers matters before deciding on removal.
What may become visible after removal
Removal can expose adhesive residue, older layers or surface conditions that were not visible before. These findings can affect preparation.
A clear scope explains how newly discovered conditions will be discussed with you before work changes.
What to Clarify Before Removal
- Which flooring and layers are included in the removal scope.
- Who is responsible for disposal of the removed material.
- What preparation is planned for the exposed surface.
- How the new floor will meet adjoining floors that stay in place.
- How new findings after removal will be discussed before work continues.
Comparing estimates that include different preparation scopes
Two estimates for the same rooms can describe very different work. One may include removal of every layer and surface preparation; another may assume the existing floor stays. Compare what each one includes, not only the total.
Ask each installer to explain removal, disposal, preparation and transitions so you are comparing the same scope.
Common questions
- Is disposal automatically included with removal?
- Not automatically. Disposal responsibility should be confirmed in the scope.
